Thanks to a tip from a reader (does that sound important or what?) on my previous post, I came across a mural-in-progress on Ellice Avenue near Banning Street depicting Karl Marx, the father (or would that be eldest brother?) of communism. The mural appears to be sponsored by the West End BIZ.

Unlike local socialist heroes like Jacob Penner, Joe Zuken, J.S. Woodsworth, or R.B. Russell, there is no direct connection between Marx and the city's West End or the city in general. But as the reader pointed out, his legacy is alive and well all across the province: the mural is painted on a building that's home to an outlet of the province's vehicle insurance government monopoly, while a block south is an outlet of the liquor government monopoly. Looming down Ellice, in the shiny new headquarters of the government's hydro monopoly. Comrade Marx would be proud that these "valuable services" have been taken out of the hands of individuals (who are too feeble to own their own liquor store, or choose what car insurance they want) and put into the hands of the people.
Or maybe Marx' image was placed there to remind so many aging West Enders why they fled to Canada from Europe in the first place.

Can't wait until it's finished, so our City's proletarian graffiti artists can have another canvass on which to express their alienation.
"City's proletarian graffiti artists" - ahhh....vandals you mean !
You're more than welcome to start your own hydro-electricity generating and distribution company.
Could one's own hydro-electric company use taxation to keep prices lower than market values?
OMG!
Galston is totally going to be the Tories "cool" candidate in Point Douglas in 2011.
Watch out George Hicks, you have a yuppie who wants to privatize the province coming after you!
"You're more than welcome to start your own hydro-electricity generating and distribution company."
Actually, no, you're not.
Please see the Manitoba Hydro Act, S. 15.2. for details.
Well if you look at the election results you see that the Tories were closer in votes to the NDP in Point Douglas than they were in Fort Gary or the Burbs in St. Vital.
Not sure if that shows some Tory strength in P.D or if it just shows how crappy Baby Hughie is.
Please see Strunk & White's "Elements of Style," Rule #1.
Looks like your blog has some pull—apparently the party's Central Committee has now decided to eschew further controversy by rescinding the artist's authorization to celebrate Comrade Karl on the wall in question.
But for those who really do crave state control over all things economic, you can join the 3 other members of the Facebook group "Save the Marx mural!"
I'm glad MY name is NOT on that Facebook group. ;)
