Another reason to move
The problem with downtown renewal, is that so many buildings get in your way...
Word 'round the development campfire is that the City has given Sport Manitoba permission to demolish the 125-year-old Smart Bag Building at 145 Pacific Avenue (written about in early January). Not formal permission, of course, since that could only come after Council removes 145 Pacific off the mainly ceremonial Municipal Conservation List--months after it added to the list. Presumably, this is still for the purpose of constructing a parking garage.
(I wonder if this is going to be another "tough one" for the Heritage Winnipeg board to decide a position on, the way it was when this issue came to the public attention in January.)

I am so damned mad about the ludicrously out-of-touch pinheads at city hall. Parking has completely devastated our city, especially the downtown. Cars need to be phased out as a form of mass-transit. If they were, we'd all be much better off. The very least we can do is stop building damned parking lots and parking structures! GRRRRRR!
Well the sad truth is that CV is useless when it comes to revitalization of our Downtown.
They have absolutely no clue as to what the end game is.
Look at thier latest projects.
Main Street is destroyed from being anything more than a 9 to 5 blank space. WRHA and United Way buildings are atrocious.
The Sports Manitoba building is in the middle of nowhere, anther deal brokered by CV. How does that help with reviving the area?
The Union Tower deal was done before McGowan even came on the scene. CV did help broker the deal. But thank god they are not in charge of the project, or you would have seen the demo of the annex, and who knows what else.
The guy in charge does not understand the downtown. He sees it as a suburban developer would. I don't blame him. He is a suburban developer type, to old to listen and learn.
I don’t even blame the City. They have CV to do this stuff.
I blame the Board of CV who have no fking clue and the Planning Department who has no balls to stand up for our downtown.
There is only one think to do to stop this madness. Embarrass the hell out of our leaders.
Its time someone brings in people from other cities. The best downtown architects, the best downtown developers and planners. Have them assess what is going on here, an audit. Have them provide some input on what is happening. Maybe you and I and others are just plain wrong.
If Mgowan is really proud of what he is doing, then he should not have a problem having the best of the best, his peers judge him and is plans.
Its seems these people in powerful positions don’t give a fuck.
Maybe they will listen to outsiders.
Rob. Open up a bank account, and I’ll contribute $1,000 to get these peers here. And will ask other I know to do the same.
This is the only way to change the course.
Or else, lets all just give up and move.
And how long have they owned the Avenue Building?
Fella's, if you are so concerned, find like minded investors and buy these places up.
^ why? Thats not my role.
Thats' CVs' role. They are the public agency in charge of revitilization NOT. They know nothing. They are the One's with MY TAX DOLLARS, and they know NOTHING about how to do thier job properly.
Get it know Nobody?
And its not about finding an investor(s).
Its about setting a direciton that is uber positove for investors to follow. Since they have thier hand in my pocket, they sould comply. But they do not have too, because there is nothing to comply too. GET IT?
sure urban, I get it.
The role of staging the right type development for the downtown belongs to the Planning Department and Centreventure.
If you think putting up a sign and waiting for an investor to follow who also understands the downtown market and placemaking, you will have a while to wait my friends. There are reasons why Main Street is the next urban revitalization failure for our City. And Urban hit it on the nail.
There are no guidelines for the type of development that will thrive there, never mind design guidelines. This approach takes resources, time and most importantly money to address the real market challenges of the area, in order to develop anything remotely to what Robert has described. And skill too which the city is short off.
So the only development that will fly is government offices and social housing. As this is where is the money is. A backdoor incentive program. I guess that's what you have on Main street eh? Smarten up folks.
Its hard to imagine after such brilliance of waterfront drive, cv has slipped, quite a bit, and the planning department is nowhere to be found. I’ll kick in 1000 bucks too Urban to see these folks kick the planning department in the ass.
We see the reports of "corruption" in Montreal. This rivals that. What is the point of the conservation list if it's ignored. Well it's not "rape - rape'...
