This piece on Centre Venture's new plan might be news, or it might be more pre-election nonsense. With a serious campaign looming, Katz' City Hall is tying up all their loose ends before October, including Centre Venture's failed "heart of gold" mandate for Main and Portage. Scramble up a phantom urban renewal scheme for the shamefully blighted NW corner of Portage and Donald, throw in some tired old contradictory mush about how downtown is "too spread out" (more on that in the future), and is close to "the tipping point," and you've got yourself another story on the Business page.
Centre Venture's sudden string of good luck with finding developers (the Avenue Building, the Bell Hotel, and the Youth For Christ mega-centre) may have alot to do with City Hall's sudden willingness to allow them to make deals at a loss. City Hall is clerly happy to spend, spend, spend on things that could make Katz look bad come October--the current incarnation of Centre Venture chief among them.

What is Centre Venture doing with the old pump house? I have presented them with a workable proposal to convert it to an attractive public space at minimum cost and no changes to the existing structure or contents. I have not heard back from them.
Because you want the property for free and its a shitty idea because there is a crap load of public space across the street?
I would guess.
Centre Venture needs a million bucks for that dump.( and you pay for the cleanup- nasty asbestos and pcb's )
The City sold it for a few hundred K and Centre Venture bought it back for nearly 3 times the price, even after the new owners broke an agreement not to move historical equipment out. Even after the new owners did nothing with the joint and possibly never intended anything with it but to allow a City department to make them a good profit on their deal.
Scummy little town. Bulldoze it, and shutter the windows on Centre Venture.
