What did we just buy?

More inteptitude from the land of no bottom lines and other people's money...

West End Dumplings went over the WRHA's mess on Main Street, and brought up the WRHA getting a $500,000 tax subsidy. This made me wonder, if Council approved a $500,000 tax break on a development, shouldn't they know what that money is going toward?

Sounds like Crystal Developers are still around after being shooed away by the Friends of Upper Fort Garry last year, and are now planning a rental apartment complex in a more appropriate location: in the far-flung suburbs.

So now instead of a 15-storey apartment block downtown at the corner of Fort Street and Assiniboine Ave., Winnipeg will get a sprawling complex of four, five, and six storey blocks out along the Sterling Lyon Parkway.

[Edit] Speaking of the kinds of development Winnipeg really wants, how does 300,000 square feet of retail at Regent Avenue and Highway 59 (behind Kildonan Place mall, to be more precise), possibly later this year, sound?

Well, of course. All they have to do now is walk across the street to their new Ikea.

@Graham: Ha! How many of them would walk that massive distance? Would I? Have you ever tried to walk around the Kildonan Place "neighborhood" or cross Kenaston on foot to go from shop to shop?

We'll have to put BRT in.

i'm hoping that they do develop over by KP it would be good for transcona and east elmwood.

more reason for me to leave St. Vital and move back to my home neighborhood of elmwood.

In this very post, you show that are people willing to invest their own money in Winnipeg. The only problem is that they take the cynical view of an easy big box buck in the suburbs. In a way, it's hard to blame the likes of CV when those with deep pockets are choosing to build in places which will eventually lead to a donut of a city.

That's another Shindleman propery across from KP, right? I believe the Freep had something on this a few months ago.

Seems like Shindleman is one step ahead. Insider info ?

Wonder how much land he's accumulated for the inland port in the northwest end. A few goombahs are going to make a tidy profit.

Ech, what a waste. Sprawl at its finest.
Well, at least it's better than a one/two-story suburb neighbourhood.

Better to have new retail in the northeast corner of the city near Regent where traffic flows can accomodate it rather than the snarled traffic mess around Polo Park.

If you all are against sprawl, why aren't you loudly in favor of tangible, demonstrably effective plans to induce urban infill (i.e. the Norman D. Wilson subway)?

Oh, I get it—because a BRT down some old rail tracks out to Fort Richmond is a better idea....

So Tru, are you in favor of moving the Stadium ( not built ) and the University downtown ( under massive renovation ) ?

Like you I'm against building a BRT which exports people ...down some old rail tracks out to Fort Richmond

I am in favor of looking at effective plans to induce urban infill, but I would add "massive" to the equation.

There's already one university downtown. It's a tad late to relocate the entire U of M. It's not the only transit destination around—there are 670,000 Winnipeggers that have no need to go there most days.

Stadia downtown tend to create border vacuums (look it up) so I wouldn't recommend putting another one (baseball anyone?) in the CBD. A rebuild at the existing Polo Park location makes more sense than the U of M, which isn't such a bad idea either.

Anyone driven on Route 90 lately? What a joke. Bumper-to-bumper from McGillvary to Portage at 2 p.m. $1 billion infrastructure deficit? Try $50 billion. This city needs proper motorways as much as it does proper (subterranean rail) transit.
